Scores Library contains 400,000 pages of the most important classical music
scores, manuscripts, and previously unpublished material, allowing for the study
and analysis of more than 8,000 musical scores. Many items have associated audio
tracks in Classical Music Library, so that subscribers to both databases can
listen to a recording online while following along with the full score.

use of printed scores typically requires research across a variety of formats –
paper, digital images, proprietary electronic formats – and through a variety of
interfaces. Classical Scores Library allows users to access multiple types of
scores across various composers, genres, and time periods. Within seconds,
beginning music students can explore Beethoven’s entire compositional output, or
music experts can compare different musical settings of the Magnificat from the
15th century to the 21st century—without the need to find and carry heavy scores

with the works of Mercy Otis Warren, Judith Sargent Murray,
and Susanna Haswell Rowson in colonial times. It includes a
rich collection of nineteenth-century melodramas exploring
topics from domestic entrapment to life on the frontier to
the Underground Railroad. The database covers the campaign
for voting rights, including propaganda plays, as well as
the growing crusade for women’s access to higher education
and inclusion in various professions. The collection covers

drama, and Asian American studies. They present views of
important historical events, such as the construction of the
railroads in the nineteenth century, the internment of
Japanese Americans during World War II, and the Vietnam
conflict. The plays also address sociological issues, such
as assimilation, integration, and cultural identity in a
Western context. The effect of Western religion is also
examined. For example, David Henry Hwang’s Family Devotions
deals with evangelism and religious identity as experienced
by Chinese Americans. By reenacting experiences familiar to
audiences, these plays provide opportunities for viewers to
examine their own reactions to racism and other experiences
of their ethnicity.

are a microcosm: a sum of heterogeneous parts that form a
whole. The term “Latino” (as we use it) encompasses all
citizens of the United States whose heritage is Mexican,
Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central American, and South American,
as well as descendents of those who became U.S. citizens
when Mexico reluctantly gave up fifty per cent of its
territories at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.
Mexican American prose tends to reflect social themes, given
the migratory pattern of mostly agricultural workers with
minimal formal education. The wave of Cuban immigration
after the Cuban Revolution in 1959 brings the nostalgic
voice of an educated middle class. Nuyoricans, the large
contingent of Puerto Rican immigrants in New York, add to
the mix their verve and creativity, freely using a mixture
of English and Spanish. Salvadorans, Nicaraguans,
Dominicans, and other Central and South American immigrants
write about the social upheaval in their countries.
